Frequently asked questions

What is the deadline to file my return?

If you or your spouse carry on a business, you have until June 15 to file your return. However, any balance owing must be paid by April 30, otherwise interest applies.

Which expenses can I deduct?

You can generally deduct reasonable expenses incurred to earn your business income, such as supplies, equipment, telecommunications, advertising and professional fees. The personal portion of an expense is not deductible, and you must keep your supporting documents.

Can I deduct my home office?

Yes, if the space is your principal place of business, or if it is used only for your business and for meeting clients on a regular and continuous basis. This deduction cannot create or increase a business loss; the excess can be carried forward to future years.

Do I need to pay tax instalments?

In Québec, you must pay instalments if your tax owing exceeds $1,800 for the current year and for one of the two previous years. This rule applies separately to federal tax and to Québec tax. Instalments are generally due on March 15, June 15, September 15 and December 15.

How do QPP and QPIP contributions work?

As a self-employed worker, you pay both the employee and employer shares of Québec Pension Plan (QPP) contributions, calculated on your net self-employment income. You also pay the Québec Parental Insurance Plan (QPIP) premium at the self-employed rate. These amounts are calculated on your Québec income tax return.

Do I need to register for GST and QST?

It depends on your income and activities. We check with you whether registration is mandatory or advantageous in your situation, and we can register you. Learn more about our GST/QST services.

Do I need to register my business?

If you operate your business under a name that does not include your first and last name, you must register it with the Registraire des entreprises within 60 days of starting your activities. You then receive a Québec enterprise number (NEQ).

When should I incorporate?

It depends on your income, your personal needs and your plans. Read our guide Incorporation: when does it make sense?, then let’s discuss your situation.
