Frequently asked questions
What is the deadline to file my return?
Generally April 30. If you or your spouse carry on a business, you have until June 15 to file, but any balance owing must be paid by April 30. If the date falls on a weekend, it is moved to the next business day.
What documents do I need to provide?
Your slips for the year (employment, benefits, pensions, investments), your receipts (medical expenses, donations, childcare, RRSP contributions), your RL-31 if you are a tenant, and your last notice of assessment. See our guide Documents for your tax return.
I had no income this year. Do I still need to file?
Even with no income or tax to pay, filing your returns is generally necessary to receive certain credits and benefits, such as the Québec solidarity tax credit and benefits paid by the CRA.
I received a slip after filing my return. What should I do?
You need to request a change to the return already filed: federally, through My Account or with form T1-ADJ; in Québec, through My Account or with form TP-1.R. A refund request must concern a year ending in one of the ten previous calendar years. We can prepare these requests for you.
I just arrived in Canada. How does my first return work?
In your year of arrival, special rules apply to the income you must report. Some benefits also require a separate application: for example, the Canada child benefit is requested from the CRA, and Québec’s Family allowance is requested from Retraite Québec. We tell you which steps apply to your situation.
Can you prepare returns for previous years?
Yes. We prepare late returns and returns for prior years. Interest and penalties may apply depending on your file. See our guide Late tax returns.
How do I send you my documents?
You can bring your documents to our office at 819 King Street West in Sherbrooke, or send them by email. With your authorization, we can also view certain slips in the Revenu Québec and CRA online services. Please do not send documents or personal information (such as your social insurance number) through the website contact form.
