Documents for your tax return

The checklist to prepare your federal and Québec returns without missing anything.

A complete file lets us prepare your returns faster and avoid changes afterwards. Here are the most common documents. You won’t need all of them: keep only what applies to your situation.

Personal information

  • Your last federal and Québec notices of assessment
  • Any change in your situation during the year: address, marital status, birth or adoption, arrival in Canada
  • Information about your spouse and dependants, if applicable
  • Your social insurance number, to give us in person or by phone — never through the website contact form

Employment income and benefits

  • T4 slips and RL-1 slips (employment income)
  • T4A slips (other income, such as scholarships or fees)
  • T4E slip (employment insurance benefits)
  • RL-6 slip (Québec Parental Insurance Plan benefits)

Pensions and retirement

  • T4A(P) slips (Québec Pension Plan) and T4A(OAS) slips (Old Age Security)
  • T4A slips and RL-2 slips (retirement pensions and annuities)
  • T4RSP and T4RIF slips and RL-2 slips (RRSP or RRIF withdrawals)

Investments

  • T5 slips and RL-3 slips (interest and dividends)
  • T3 slips and RL-16 slips (income from trusts and mutual funds)
  • T5008 slips and brokerage statements (sales of securities), with the purchase cost of the investments sold

Receipts for credits and deductions

  • RRSP contribution receipts (including those from the first 60 days of the following year)
  • Charitable donation receipts
  • Medical expense receipts for you and your family
  • RL-24 slip and childcare expense receipts
  • Form T2202 (tuition fees)
  • RL-31 slip if you are a tenant, for the solidarity tax credit

Self-employed workers

  • A record of your business income (invoices issued or a report from your accounting software)
  • Your business expenses and supporting documents
  • Home office and vehicle expenses (business kilometres and total kilometres)
  • Your GST/QST returns and the instalments paid during the year

Rental property owners

  • A record of rents received
  • Expense invoices: municipal and school taxes, insurance, maintenance, repairs
  • Your annual mortgage interest statement
  • The deed of purchase or sale if you bought or sold a building during the year

How to send us your documents

You can bring your documents to our office at 819 King Street West in Sherbrooke, or send them by email. With your authorization, we can also view many slips directly in the Revenu Québec and CRA online services, which reduces the number of documents to gather.
